When travelling, people rely on digital connectivity for pretty well everything - from converting currencies to staying in touch with family back home. And with technology improving, advances in AI and eSIMs have made staying connected easier than ever.

This ZandaX article shows how these tools help to reduce, or even eliminate, things like expensive roaming fees and help people to enjoy better connectivity across borders.

What Are eSIMs?

A mobile phone is an essential item for most people nowadays, but using your phone overseas can of course cause problems. With a standard SIM card, you may face connectivity issues or even end up paying extortionate roaming fees.

An eSIM, short for embedded SIM, is a digital version of the physical SIM card. Most modern smartphones now have a small internal chip that can hold a cellular data plan inside the phone. This allows you to install your own local mobile data plan, using the internet without even handling a physical card. You can choose a plan and set it up before you leave home, so you can instantly connect to the local network on arrival.

Why Use an eSIM?

There are a number of excellent reasons why people are switching to eSIMs when they go overseas:
  • With an eSIM app, you don’t need to find and buy a physical SIM card when you arrive at your destination. This means you can connect instantly, which obviously saves a lot of time and hassle when you step off the plane.
  • You don’t need to carry out the fiddly process of switching a physical SIM card in your phone … and maybe losing it during the process!
  • International roaming is notoriously expensive, but by using an eSIM, you won’t have any of these fees to pay.
  • With your own private connection you can also skip insecure airport Wi-Fi.

How to Select an eSIM Plan

Start by evaluating your specific needs for your style of travel as well as the destination or destinations you will be visiting. How frequently you need to connect to the internet will determine how much data you will need on your eSIM plan.

Installing an eSim

For example, when communicating while abroad, you might only need to connect once a day to check in with friends and family back home. But you might prefer to connect throughout the day to use maps, stream videos, and access social media.

When you have a good idea of your usage needs, explore online and see what you can find. There are several options, so compare prices, data limits, and online reviews until you find one that looks like a good fit.

How AI Tools Are Making Travel Better

AI is impacting travel in many ways. Artificial intelligence applications now offer a huge amount for modern travelers, helping with language, navigation, and more. Over half of U.S. travelers are using AI to some degree, from planning to navigating a trip.

The main issue with these apps is that they need continuous access to data, and this is where having an eSIM comes in handy. By making sure you have enough data to access all the AI apps you want to use, you can have a trouble-free experience as you explore.

AI is being incorporated into several travel apps, and there are a few ways that you can use it on your next trip.

Translation Apps

Language assistance is one of the main ways AI can help when you go overseas. If you don’t speak the local language, communication barriers can be a real difficulty. There are now apps that provide real-time voice translation and image recognition for road signs or menus.

Translation technology has improved enormously in recent years. Of course, there are a lot of translation apps to choose from, but Google Translate is one of the leading apps in this space.  It uses AI to enhance the experience, and even provides a camera translation feature that you can use to translate signs and menus, which is very useful when you’re moving around.

It also has a Conversation Mode. This allows two people to hold a conversation using the app in over 70 languages, which can save a lot of frustration, whether you’re asking for directions or spekaing to a store owner.

Personal Assistants

Personal travel assistants are another type of AI app changing the travel experience. Take, for example, an app like Stardrift, which provides you with a travel assistant that changes your ideas into complete schedules, and it even helps you organize your flights, activities, and hotels.

Then there are travel companion apps, like Mindtrip, that use AI to help in different ways. They can be set up to provide tailored recommendations, event updates in real time, and they haveinteractive map routes which allow you to adjust your schedule in real time.
