If you’re looking to get your finger on the pulse of US-recognised organ-based medicine, you’ve come to the right place!  The good news is that you don’t necessarily need to study in America to get hands on training in organ-based medicine (also known as Organ-System-Based Curriculum) and, in this article, we’re getting you prepped for six global medical schools offering U.S. style curriculums with active pedagogy.

You don't need to study in the US to get a US-style curriculum

What to Look for in the Best Global Medical Schools

Before we open up and dive into the schools on our list, there’s no doubt you’re asking what makes them good options? The simple answer is that all of these schools offer valuable accreditation from organisations such as CAAM-HP. They also use similar teaching methods and strategies as US schools but, most importantly, they have the prestige of having arranged clinical rotations within hospitals in the USA.

When choosing a school, you should check out for a pass rate of over 75% and a high rate of placement. You’ll also want to see what kind of support they offer to students from overseas as this can be a deal breaker. Finally, modern buildings with state of the art equipment and small class sizes are all good indicators of a great school.

1. American University of Antigua (AUA)

Best Overall U.S.-Style Medical Education

Founded in 2004, the AUA holds accreditation as an international school of medicine and has a focus on encouraging minorities and students of different origins into medical training. Working in small groups, AUAMED offers organ-based medical training based on US methodology and students complete their first trench of education at the Antigua based campus before graduating to a clinical rotation in America.

What makes AUA special ?

As well as being recognised by American medical giants such as New York and California, AUA has full approval from the Caribbean Accreditation Authority for Education in Medicine and holds pride of place in

WDOMS (World Directory of Medical Schools). As if that’s not enough, this prestigious school also offers CPD (Continuing Professional Development) courses so that you can learn medicine alongside other studies.

With careful research, you'll get what you want from your course

2. Medical University of the Americas (MUA), Nevis

Best for Clinical Rotation Networks

Based in Saint Kitts and Nevis, the Medical University of the Americas allows graduating students to gain a medical license in all 50 US states, Canada, the United Kingdom and more. Students enrolled in MUA’s MD program will start with two years on campus learning basic methods and techniques. Semesters 6 to 10 will be spent on rotation in America or Canada and students enjoy low class sizes with high educational standards throughout.

What makes them stand out?

Of those who have actively participated in NRMP and have placed with a North American ACGME clinical rotation, an impressive 94% get a U.S residency within three years of completing their studies

3. University of Health Sciences Antigua (UHSA)

Best for Multi-Country Clinical Experience

Established way back in 1982, this school retains the same ethos it had back then - to train medical professionals who want to make a difference when it comes to global health. A top level education is coupled with a deep understanding of different cultures to create a dream team of medical education at UHSA During the four year program, students will learn all the science stuff in Antigua before being placed on rotation in the US, the UK, Canada or Pakistan.

What makes UHSA stand out?

This school is committed to student success and, as such, has an impressively large network for training and clerkships compared to other similar organisations.

A practical training gives you a deeper understanding

4. Texila American University

Best CAAM-HP Accredited Alternative

This remarkable seat of learning has been training the world’s medical professionals since 1982 and an education here will set you up for a vocation of global healthcare with a focus on diverse cultures.

The four year program begins with the science bit which takes place in the modern university in Antigua. Students will then pack their bags for a three or four year rotation in the USA, Canada, Great Britain or Pakistan.

What makes them special ?

The University of Health Sciences boasts the largest network of international placements of any Caribbean school - offering real-world clinical training in five different countries.

5. University of the West Indies (UWI)

Best for Regional Healthcare Focus

While the West Indies may be best known for their cricket team, its medical training comes in a very close second. This outstanding school has campuses across the region including Jamaica, Trinidad and Barbados so students are spoilt for choice when it comes to studying in a beautiful place. Students here receive excellent foundational training with a nod to tropical diseases and region-specific conditions.

Making Your Decision

So, we’ve introduced you to six great schools and now it’s time to make your mind up - but before you do, know one thing. Medical training is complex and can be gruelling and so you will need to work hard. Because of this, committing to organ-based training is a decision that should never be taken lightly. So if you want to make medicine your career, be sure to take a few things into consideration including location, language, cost and length of study.

Ready to start your medical career? - If your heart is set on a U.S style medical education, make sure to check out your chosen schools (including all that pesky small print).  Look for reviews from students, and if you can, reach out to current or former students so you can get an idea of what to expect.

And best of luck with your new, world-changing career!
